Pulkovo Observatory
An observatory near St Petersburg in Russia, originally established in 1718. The present site dates from 1835; the buildings were destroyed during World War II and subsequently rebuilt in their old style. The observatory is associated particularly with the Struve family, six members of which became well-known astronomers. F. G. W. Struve was director from 1839 to 1862 and his son, Otto, director from 1862 to 1889. Today the observatory is concerned mainly with astrometry and instrument development. Its official title is the Main Astronomical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences at Pulkovo.
